Immediate steps after an accident 6 questions
What should I do immediately after a car accident in Austria?

Stop immediately, stay calm and secure the accident scene. If anyone is injured or an injury is possible, provide first aid or get help and notify the police. For property damage only, different rules apply, especially around exchanging details. Document the accident only once the situation is safe.

What are the most important emergency numbers after an accident?

In Austria, the key numbers are: ambulance 144, police 133, fire brigade 122 and European emergency number 112. If anyone is injured, there is danger, fire or a blocked road, call emergency services first. Digital documentation comes after that.

Do I always have to stop after an accident?

Yes. Anyone involved in a traffic accident must stop and help establish what happened. This applies not only to serious accidents, but generally also to property damage.

Can I leave the accident scene?

Not simply. First, the obligations after the accident must be handled: stop, secure the scene, help injured people or get help, notify the police where required, and exchange or prove the required details for property damage. If it is property damage only, the police can be omitted only when name and address can be proven.

What does securing the accident scene mean?

The accident scene should be secured so no further danger arises. Typically this means hazard lights, a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle, as far as this is safely possible. The priority is safety first, documentation second.

When should I use the digital accident report?

Only after the situation is safe. If anyone is injured, there is fire, danger, a blocked road, or an accident on a motorway or in a tunnel, securing the scene, first aid and emergency calls come first. Unfallbericht.at is for the later documentation: people involved, vehicles, insurance, accident description, photos, sketch and PDF.

Police & ambulance 7 questions
Do I have to call the police after every car accident?

No. If there is property damage only, the police are not necessarily required when all parties can prove their name and address to each other. If that is not possible, the police must be notified.

When do I need to notify the police?

The police should be notified especially if someone was injured or an injury is possible, a reliable exchange of name and address is not possible, a person involved cannot be found, someone refuses to provide details, there are language barriers, a parked vehicle was damaged and the driver is not present, third-party property was damaged, wildlife is involved, or the situation is dangerous or unclear.

Do I always have to call the police if someone is injured?

Yes. If people were injured, the parties involved must provide help or get help and notify the nearest police station immediately. If medical help is needed, call the ambulance as well.

What should I do if I am not sure whether someone is injured?

If an injury seems possible, treat the situation like a personal injury accident: secure the scene, provide first aid or get help, and notify ambulance services or police. If in doubt, call emergency services.

Do I need to call an ambulance if someone is injured?

If people are injured, help must be provided or obtained. In practice, this means: if there are injuries, pain, consciousness issues or an unclear situation, call ambulance 144 or the European emergency number 112.

What happens if I call the police for property damage only?

If the police are called for property damage only even though exchanging details would have been possible, the accident reporting fee, often called Blaulichtsteuer in Austria, may apply. Publicly available information puts this fee at 36 euros.

Should I avoid calling the police because of the accident reporting fee?

No. The fee matters only when the accident involves property damage only and exchanging details would have been possible. If there are injuries, uncertainty, refused details, a dispute, hit-and-run, parked-car damage without the other party present, or danger, the police are important. Safety and proper reporting matter more than avoiding a fee.

Property damage & exchanging details 7 questions
What do I need to exchange when there is property damage only?

If the police are not notified, name and address must be proven. For the practical claims process, you should also document license plates, insurance details, vehicle details, accident location, time, photos, a sketch and witnesses.

What does proving name and address mean?

The parties must be able to reliably prove their name and address to each other. Merely exchanging phone numbers is not enough. If there is property damage only, the police may be omitted only when name and address can be proven.

Is it enough to exchange only phone numbers?

No, you should not rely on that. The central requirement is proof of name and address. Phone number, email and insurance details are useful additional information, but they do not reliably replace proof of name and address.

What should I do if the other party refuses to provide details?

Then a proper exchange of details is not possible. In that case, you should notify the police.

What should I do if I do not understand the other party because of language barriers?

If a reliable exchange of details is not possible, you should notify the police. This also applies when communication problems make it unclear whether the required details were actually proven.

What should I do if the other party is aggressive?

Do not put yourself in danger. Secure the situation, keep your distance and notify the police if needed. Document the accident only when you are safe.

Should I discuss fault at the scene?

No. At the scene, focus on documenting facts: location, time, people involved, vehicles, damage, accident description, photos, sketch and witnesses. Fault is assessed later by insurers, authorities or courts.

Accident report & documentation 8 questions
Why should I fill out an accident report at all?

An accident report helps record all important information: people involved, vehicles, insurance, damage, accident sketch, photos and witnesses. This makes the later insurance notification easier and reduces misunderstandings.

What belongs in an accident report?

Useful information includes the accident location, date and time, names and addresses of the parties, license plates, vehicle details, insurance details, description of what happened, visible damage, photos, sketch, witnesses and, where appropriate, signatures.

Do I have to take photos?

The reviewed information does not show a general obligation to take photos. For documentation, however, photos are very useful if they can be taken safely.

Which photos are especially helpful?

Helpful photos show the accident scene, vehicle positions, damage, license plates, traffic signs, traffic lights, road markings, braking marks, debris or vehicle parts, and relevant visibility or weather conditions.

What should I not write in the accident report?

Avoid premature admissions of fault, speculation or accusations. Instead, describe factually what happened and what is visible.

Does the accident report need to be signed by both parties?

A jointly completed and signed report is practically helpful. What matters most is that the relevant details are complete and understandable. A signature is not mandatory in every situation; if you are unsure about specific requirements, check with the insurance company.

What should I do if the other person does not want to sign the accident report?

Document the situation as well as possible anyway: details, photos, location, time, witnesses and your own description. If a proper exchange of details is not possible or the situation becomes disputed, you should notify the police.

Can I create the accident report digitally?

Yes. Documentation can be digital as long as the relevant information is captured completely. Unfallbericht.at guides you through the details in a structured way and creates a PDF for further use. Digital documentation does not replace statutory duties.

Parked-car damage & hit-and-run 8 questions
Is a note under the windshield wiper enough after damaging a parked car?

No. A note or business card under the windshield wiper is not enough if the damaged party is not present. In that case, the police must be notified.

What should I do if I damaged a parked car?

First try to find the driver or owner. If that person is not present or cannot be reached, you must report the incident to the police. You should also document the damage.

What should I document if I damage a parked car?

Document the location, time, license plate of the damaged vehicle, photos of the damage, photos of the parking situation, your own details and possible witnesses. A note alone is not a sufficient report.

What should I do if my own parked car was damaged?

Look for possible witnesses, document the damage and notify the police if the person who caused it is unknown. A police confirmation may be important for insurance.

Is parked-car damage automatically hit-and-run?

Not the damage itself, but leaving or failing to report can be a problem. Anyone who causes parked-car damage and cannot reach the damaged party should not rely on a note, but should notify the police.

What should I do if I notice only later that I may have damaged a car?

If damage is possible and the damaged party could not be notified immediately, you should contact the police without delay. There is no blanket all-clear in this situation.

What should I do if the other accident participant drives away?

Note what you can reliably identify: license plate, vehicle make or type, color, direction of travel, time, location and possible witnesses. Notify the police. Do not pursue the vehicle if that creates danger.

What is hit-and-run?

The term is commonly used when someone leaves after an accident without fulfilling their duties. These duties include stopping, helping establish the facts and, where required, notifying the police.

Wildlife accident 4 questions
What should I do after a wildlife accident?

Secure the accident scene, get yourself to safety and notify the responsible authority, especially the police or, depending on the situation, the hunting authority. Do not take the animal with you. Proper reporting or confirmation is often important for insurance.

May I take an injured or dead wild animal with me?

No. Do not take wildlife with you and do not remove it on your own. Notify the responsible authorities.

Should I touch an injured wild animal?

No. That can be dangerous and can put additional stress on the animal. Secure the accident scene and notify the responsible authorities.

Do I need police confirmation after a wildlife accident?

For insurance questions, confirmation is often important. The actual cover depends on the insurance contract. Report the wildlife accident and clarify the requirements with your insurer.

Motorway, expressway & tunnel 7 questions
What is especially important after an accident on the motorway?

Safety. Switch on hazard lights, put on a high-visibility vest, leave the vehicle and carriageway if this is safely possible, and wait behind the guardrail. If anyone is injured, there is danger or the road is blocked, call emergency services immediately.

May I take photos on the motorway?

Only if it is safe. The danger on a motorway is particularly high. Document the accident only when you are in a safe place.

What is the emergency corridor?

When traffic is congested or stop-and-go on motorways and expressways, an emergency corridor must be formed so emergency vehicles can pass. It must be formed proactively as soon as congestion starts to develop.

When should I fill out the digital accident report on the motorway?

Only after you have brought yourself and others to safety. Do not fill it out on the carriageway, in a danger area or while urgent safety measures are still in progress.

What should I do after an accident in a tunnel?

In a tunnel accident, switch on hazard lights, stop the vehicle as safely as possible, turn off the engine and use the tunnel emergency equipment. If there is smoke or fire, follow escape routes and instructions. Digital documentation comes only after the danger phase.

Why should I use the emergency call equipment in a tunnel?

Tunnel emergency call equipment helps transmit the exact location in the tunnel and trigger the right measures. Use it if this is safely possible.

Should I stay in the car during a tunnel fire?

If there is smoke or fire, follow escape routes, emergency equipment and instructions from emergency services or tunnel systems. Bring yourself and others to safety as far as possible and use the designated emergency equipment.

Damage to third-party property 3 questions
What should I do if I damaged a guardrail, traffic sign or fence?

This is not merely damage to your own vehicle. If third-party property was damaged and a direct exchange with the damaged party is not possible, you should notify the police or the responsible authority.

What should I do if oil, vehicle parts or cargo are on the road?

Then there is danger for others. The accident scene must be secured and, if there is danger, emergency services or the responsible authority must be notified. Documentation comes second.

What should I do if my car is no longer roadworthy after the accident?

First secure the accident scene and avoid further danger. Towing and breakdown details depend on the specific case, location and insurance or roadside assistance cover. Do not leave the vehicle in a dangerous place and contact roadside assistance or the responsible authority.

Insurance & claims notification 7 questions
When do I need to inform my insurance company?

After an accident, the relevant insurance company should be notified without delay, at the latest within one week.

Which insurance company do I need to inform?

Depending on the case, your own motor liability insurer, the other party's liability insurer, your own comprehensive insurer and legal expenses insurance may be relevant. Which insurer actually pays depends on the claim and the contract.

Do I need to inform my own insurance company if I was not at fault?

Yes, that is sensible. Inform your own insurer as a precaution and clarify the next steps.

What should the insurance notification contain?

The notification should describe the facts as accurately as possible. Helpful documents include the accident report, photos, details of the parties, license plates, insurance details, damage description and witness details.

What happens if I inform the insurance company too late?

What is clear is that notification should happen without delay, at the latest within one week. The consequences of a late notification depend on the insurance contract and the individual case. Clarify specific requirements with your insurer.

Do I need to report the damage if it is minor?

If an accident or insured event occurred, the responsible insurer should be informed. Even minor damage can become relevant later.

Do I need police confirmation for the insurance company?

That depends on the case. For parked-car damage, hit-and-run, wildlife accidents or unclear situations, a police report or confirmation is often important. For property damage only with a proper exchange of details, an accident report may be sufficient for processing. Clarify the specific requirements with the insurer.

Commute & business trip 4 questions
What applies after an accident on the way to work?

An accident on the way to work may be relevant as a work accident in certain circumstances. The exact classification depends on the specific case.

Do I need to inform my employer after an accident on the way to work?

Yes, that is sensible. If the accident could be relevant as a work or commute accident, the employer should be informed so possible reporting duties can be checked.

Are there deadlines for work accidents?

Reporting duties exist for work accidents. Publicly available information states that a reportable work accident generally has to be reported within five days; a fatal accident within three days. The concrete duty should be clarified with the employer, accident insurance provider or responsible authority.

Is an accident during a business trip different from a private accident?

The immediate duties at the accident scene remain the same: stop, secure the scene, help and notify the police when required. In addition, the employer, company vehicle, fleet, insurance and accident insurance may be relevant.

Foreign vehicles, travel and special cases 3 questions
What should I do after an accident with a foreign vehicle in Austria?

The basic rules remain the same: secure the scene, help injured people and notify police or ambulance services, exchange and document details for property damage. License plate, country, insurance details, photos and witnesses are especially important. Specific questions around international claims handling should be checked separately.

What should I do if I do not have a European Accident Report form in the car?

Then you should document the relevant information completely in another way. Unfallbericht.at helps capture details, describe what happened, add photos and a sketch, and create a PDF.

Is the European Accident Report mandatory?

The reviewed information does not show a general duty to always carry a paper form. It is, however, a useful and recommended documentation aid.

Disputes, uncertainty and witnesses 5 questions
What should I do if the other party does not admit fault?

That is not decisive for the immediate documentation. Document the facts neutrally: accident location, time, vehicle positions, damage, photos, sketch and witnesses. Fault is assessed later by insurers, authorities or courts.

What should I do if we disagree about how the accident happened?

Document both versions factually if possible. If a proper exchange of details is not possible or the situation escalates, you should notify the police.

Should I sign an admission of fault?

At the scene, you should avoid premature admissions of fault. An accident report should document facts, not make a legal assessment.

What should I do if there are witnesses?

Note the names and contact details of possible witnesses if they provide them voluntarily. Witnesses can later be important for clarifying how the accident happened.

What should I do if I drove into an obstacle alone?

If only your own vehicle is damaged and no third-party property is affected, securing the scene and arranging breakdown assistance come first. If third-party property was damaged, such as a guardrail, fence, traffic sign or other property, you should notify the police or the responsible authority.

Fill out the accident report correctly
Data, photos and privacy 2 questions
May I take photos of the accident?

Photos are helpful for documentation. They should be taken only if nobody is put in danger. Photograph accident-relevant details where possible and avoid unnecessary photos of people.

Should I photograph ID documents?

That is sensitive and should not be recommended as a blanket rule. What is safely necessary is proof of name and address. Capture the required details correctly and document only information relevant to the accident.

Using Unfallbericht.at 6 questions
How does Unfallbericht.at help me after an accident?

Unfallbericht.at helps with structured documentation of a traffic accident: people involved, vehicles, insurance, damage, accident description, photos and PDF. This is especially useful if there is no paper accident report in the car.

Does Unfallbericht.at replace the police?

No. Unfallbericht.at does not replace police, ambulance services or statutory reporting duties. If anyone is injured, there is danger, details cannot be exchanged or the situation is unclear, notify the responsible authority first.

Does Unfallbericht.at replace the insurance notification?

No. The digital accident report can prepare and simplify the notification, but it does not replace notifying the insurance company. The insurer should be informed without delay, at the latest within one week.

Can I use Unfallbericht.at if the police were called?

Yes, but only once the situation is safe and police measures are not obstructed. The app can additionally help collect your own photos, notes and details for the insurance company.

Can I use Unfallbericht.at if there is property damage only?

Yes. Especially for property damage only with cooperative exchange of details, a digital accident report is useful. The key point remains: name and address must be proven if the police are not notified.

What is the most important first step in Unfallbericht.at?

The first question should always clarify whether anyone is injured or there is danger. Safety and emergency calls come before documentation.

Technical use of Unfallbericht.at 11 questions

These questions were already part of the FAQ page and remain available as their own section.

How did the digital accident report come about?

In Europe, there are an estimated 10 to 12 million motor vehicle accidents with property damage annually. Often, those affected don't have an accident report form, lack a pen, information about insurance, or other things. When an accident happens, the situation is already unpleasant enough, and you want to use a tool that takes the stress out of recording. Filling out an accident report as a form typically takes about an hour because both parties need to search for their data and painstakingly enter it. Additionally, there are often language barriers when a person from Austria has an accident with someone from Hungary, they can't read the form that the Austrian has. The digital accident report aims to solve all these problems.

Is the digital accident report structured for claims documentation?

The app creates a structured accident report as a PDF. The digital signatures document the information confirmed by the parties, but they are not an admission of fault.

What happens if one of us doesn't have a smartphone?

The digital accident report works even if only one person has a smartphone. The person with the smartphone can enter all data for both parties. The other person involved in the accident can use the device at the end to sign digitally.

Does the app work without an internet connection?

No, an internet connection is required to use the app. As it is a web app, you need internet for data entry, live synchronization, and PDF download. We recommend using it via mobile network or Wi-Fi.

How secure is my data?

Your data is maximally protected. All transmissions are encrypted (SSL/TLS), and data is stored in secure European data centers. We strictly adhere to GDPR and do not share data with third parties.

Can I edit the report later?

As long as the report has not been digitally signed by both parties, changes can be made. After the final signature, the report is completed and cannot be changed - this ensures legal security.

What does the digital accident report cost?

Using the digital accident report is completely free for you. All functions such as data entry, live synchronization, and PDF generation can be used without any costs.

Which languages are supported?

The digital accident report supports 13 languages: German, English, Polish, Romanian, Hungarian, Spanish, Italian, Slovak, Czech, Slovenian, Croatian, Dutch and French. Live synchronization works even with different language settings – each party sees the app in their chosen language.

How does live synchronization work?

One person creates the report and shares a unique code with the other person. They can then join via the code and see all entries live. Both people see the same information in real-time on their devices.

What happens if there are technical problems during entry?

All data is automatically saved at each intermediate step. In case of connection problems, crashes, or other technical issues, the report can simply be continued at this point. No data is lost.

Can I submit the digital accident report to my insurance company?

The generated PDF follows the structure of the European Accident Report and can be submitted as supporting claims documentation.

This information is summarized from publicly available Austrian sources such as oesterreich.gv.at, RIS and OEAMTC. It is not legal advice and does not replace information from police, ambulance services, insurers or authorities.
